We stopped at Howe Caverns during a recent visit to the Albany area. Everyone enjoyed the underground trip as well as exploring the surrounding hills and landscape. Locally mined rocks can be purchased at the gift shop.

This is an exciting adventure for people of all ages. After going down in the earth by an elevator the guides lead you thorough the cave on paths with railings looking at stalagmites and stalagtites. You even get to go on a little boat ride at the end and see what total darkness is. Nature never ceases to be amazing. If you like Howe caverns, i would recommend Seceret cavers, a short drive from howe. It ispart of the same cave, but less commercialized and build up.

We took a trip out to New York's leatherstocking district and this was one of our stops. You go underground to explore the magnificent caverns and even take a boat ride on an underground lake. They have a restaurant and gift shop. You can buy a geode and watch as they cut it in half to see the beuatiful crystals inside. You can also buy a bag of rocks, and dump them in a screen over a water trough and pan for gems. It was a fun visit.
